If there is a seam going around the sides of the drive, there may be plastic tabs holding the two halves together. Carefully prying with a jeweler's screwdriver might liberate the drive inside, but be careful as many plastic tabs are one-way. In breaking them free, unrepairable damage may be done to the catches that the tabs clip into.

See this picture to get an idea of the sort of tabs to look for (this photos details a PDA, but the same tabs may be used): http://www.takeitapart.net/photos/hp_ipaq/11.jpg
http://go.takeitapart.net/questions/2/best-way-to-clean-a-motorcycle-carburetor Best way to clean a motorcycle carburetor? What could be the problem? Chris 2009-10-04T02:00:34Z 2009-10-07T21:35:28Z
I've had a laptop for two years, and it has worked fine until recently when it stopped charging while plugged in to its power supply. What do you think could be wrong? I was guessing that the cord may shorting internally. Could this be the case? What can I do to fix it?
http://go.takeitapart.net/questions/1/my-laptop-power-supply-stopped-working-what-could-be-the-problem/17#17 Answer by Chris for My laptop power supply stopped working. What could be the problem? Chris 2009-10-07T21:35:28Z 2009-10-07T21:35:28Z
I was able to salvage the power supply. I opened the case by gently hammering a flathead screwdriver along the seam of the powerbrick. Nothing looked charred, so I moved on to the cable. I clipped the cable about an inch from the powerbrick and tested continuity, end-to-end, for each contact. No matter which combination of wires I measured, I had continuity--not good! There was a short somewhere along the length of the cable. I isolated the short by clipping off segments of cable (moving toward the laptop connector) until there was no longer continuity between the opposing contacts. I then stripped back the insulation and soldering each lead back on to the corresponding contact on the powerbrick, plugged it in, and it worked!

Let this be a lesson to coil cable properly, I suppose.
http://go.takeitapart.net/questions/14/how-do-i-take-apart-a-compaq-keyboard-and-put-it-back-together/16#16 Answer by Chris for How do I take apart a compaq keyboard and put it back together? Chris 2009-10-07T21:29:19Z 2009-10-07T21:29:19Z
Are you taking apart a laptop keyboard or a desktop keyboard? If it is a laptop keyboard, you might take a look at the following links:

http://www.takeitapart.net/archives/compaq-presario-r3000/

http://www.insidemylaptop.com/disassemble-compaq-presario-f700-notebook/

Desktop keyboards are far more servicable than laptop keyboards, but that does not mean laptop keyboards cannot be taken apart--it just requires extra care. Jewelers screwdrivers are often helpful for loosening the key supports on laptop keyboards; place them under a key and pop the horizontal bars from the sockets carefully.
http://go.takeitapart.net/questions/9/photos-are-missing-from-my-cf-card-what-can-i-do-to-find-my-pictures/12#12 Answer by Chris for Photos are missing from my CF card. How old is your card?

It might be best to try a flash memory recovery tool to restore the photos and then retire the CF card. If it comes down to cleaning the carbs, this is what I will do. http://go.takeitapart.net/questions/2/best-way-to-clean-a-motorcycle-carburetor/7#7 Comment by Chris Chris 2009-10-04T22:36:03Z 2009-10-04T22:36:03Z Cleaning (or replacing) the air filter and spark plugs prior to investigating the carburetors makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the carb rebuild link. I'll see if cleaning these parts improves performance.
